The soundtrack of the 1971 film based on the novella made use of Mahler's compositions, particularly the "Adagietto" 4th movement from the Symphony No. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. In the Oxford Guide to Literature in English Translation it is criticized for its "puritanism", which saw Lowe-Porter "tone down Mann's treatment of sexuality, especially homoeroticism". I found little to like in the protagonist except for the acclaim he had won through his literary works, something that predated the events in the story.

This translation was published in book form the following year as Death in Venice and Other Stories. The title helps create the obvious set-up, of death hanging like a sword of Damocles, of a protagonist who could move out from under the sword but chooses not to out of the adoration of a child he does not know and who his caretakers - alerted to the man's voyeurism - clearly do not want him to know.A stage production in 2013, directed by Thomas Ostermeier at the Schaubühne theatre in Berlin, titled Death in Venice/Kindertotenlieder, took elements from Gustav Mahler's song cycle Kindertotenlieder. Aschenbach checks in to his hotel, where at dinner he sees an aristocratic Polish family at a nearby table.

November issue with some marginal foxing; extra paper strip folded over outer margin of first page of November issue (not affecting Death in Venice). To Aschenbach, it is as if the boy is beckoning to him: He tries to rise and follow, only to collapse sideways into his chair.

First trade edition, first printing, one of only 1,000 copies only, of Mann's celebrated Venetian novella. There are allusions to his poems about Venice in the novella, and like Aschenbach, he died of cholera on an Italian island.
