The most engaging scenes are Kate’s flashbacks that unfold alongside the present story as both become increasingly sordid.

Fun fact: Harriet created the design of Isadora Moon’s character before she had a story for her, and all she knew at first was that Isadora would be half vampire and half fairy. In the end, the publisher went with the cover that my wife designed, incorporating a piece of her artwork. But the cookies she ices with a message to Santa are eaten, and the words she stamps out on the roof are covered by fresh snow.I am reminded of Greg Iles and the Kellerman duo, but ISABELLA MOON has a rising gusto that puts it far ahead of those in that pack. The murder mystery kept me intrigued while the supernatural elements somewhat fit this time of year. Faced with an almost complete lack of evidence – lack, even, of a body – the case of the missing girl is still open, and, though the commotion and media circus which engulfed the small town has long since subsided, frustrated Sheriff Bill Delaney is no nearer a resolution. Throughout it all, Benedict shows a deft hand at plotting and a keen eye for characterization, not just where Kate is concerned but across the full swath of the community caught up in this rich, multi-layered drama.

She also handles the intricacies of the story well; there were a few plot twists that I simply did not see coming. I'm both puzzled by my actions and ashamed, and heartly sorry to all the wonderful books I could have been reading. With a sprinkling of magic on her shoes, and a little bit of potion on the ball, she’s bound to be the best! Any of you city slickers who imagine small-town life is dull ought to read Laura Benedict's suspenseful, sexy, and haunting debut novel, Isabella Moon, as this book set in Carystown, Kentucky, proves otherwise.

Brooks places the epicenter of the Bigfoot war in a high-tech hideaway populated by the kind of people you might find in a Jurassic Park franchise: the schmo who doesn’t know how to do much of anything but tries anyway, the well-intentioned bleeding heart, the know-it-all intellectual who turns out to know the wrong things, the immigrant with a tough backstory and an instinct for survival. Then I would have to go back, thinking I missed something when it turned out it was not me, but the author's fault. Was getting too many complaints that there was … gasp … a romance and even … sex … in the books because the covers didn’t hint at the genre, which is romantic suspense.

Also, I wanted to make sure they were connected to my “brand” something the original publisher never did. I never did quite figure it out, but the character development was ok, and I thought the ghost was cool. The discovery leads Kate deep into Carystown’s secrets, while her own dangerous past threatens to overtake her. Luckily, her mum is on hand to help set things right and together they come up with a new, magical way to say goodbye to the magic pox and even make revising for the maths test fun!Fun fact: ‘Mermaid Bay Campsite’ is partly based on the campsite and beach in North Cornwall where Harriet used to stay for childhood summer holidays! the end did feel abrupt but when you take a moment afterwards you realize all characters had been covered with an ending probably in the last 2 chapters. Mostly, it's because I'd been gorging myself on Young Adult novels like Blue Bloods and House of Night for a few months.

I wasn't ready for the dirty cop and the scene that played out and exposed the person was confusing to me. Kate is a virtual unknown in Carystown, having drifted into town a couple of years before with no history to speak of and only a few friends in town. When Isadora’s teacher announces the class are having a maths test on Monday, Isadora gets a nervous feeling in her tummy. Laura Benedict is the Edgar- and ITW Thriller Award- nominated author of eight novels of suspense, including The Stranger Inside (Publishers Weekly starred review). For Kate has long-buried secrets of her own that the Sheriff’s enquiries are threatening to uncover. In an instant, a reluctant Kate finds herself at the centre of the case, herself a suspect, and her past under the unwelcome scrutiny of Sheriff Delaney.
