And now I’ll review it, and hopefully I’ll do it justice so that you’ll go read and fall in love with it too. A little note: "A Gathering Light" and "A Northern Light" are exactly the same book, the second one being the American original title. Whilst working at a hotel, she is given a stack of letters by Grace, one of the female guests and told to burn them—the day before the woman is found drowned. Girls, don’t you believe Fitzgerald and all that doom-laden stuff at the end of The Great Gatsby; believe the Dreeem. I would recommend this book to any reader looking for a quality YA story that doesn't involve vampires, fairies, TSTL heroines and abusive boyfriends. It follows Cinderella's wicked stepsister Isabelle as personifications of fate and chance battle for control of her life, hinting that there may be hope after all for a girl labeled "ugly" since her first appearances in literature. Mattie is a beautifully-realised and highly engaging character, and Jennifer Donnelly has created an absorbing story, part mystery/part coming-of-age novel, which will hold the reader's attention to the last. A Northern Light is an interesting blend of historical fiction, murder mystery, and commentary on sex, race, and social status at the beginning of the 20th century, but mainly this story is feminist at its core (but not in an "in-your-face"/bra-burning way).Jennifer Donnelly is the author of thirteen novels - Poisoned, Stepsister, Lost in a Book, These Shallow Graves, Sea Spell, Dark Tide, Rogue Wave, Deep Blue, Revolution, A Northern Light, The Tea Rose, The Winter Rose and The Wild Rose - and Humble Pie, a picture book for children. Each day she learns a new word and with Weaver, her friend, she plays a wonderfully simple game in which they do battle firing associated words back and forth. Because, ultimately, this is simply the story of Mattie Gokey, a sixteen-year-old girl, the eldest of four daughters being "cared for" by a grieving father who lost the love of his life and is too lost in his grief to see that his girls are suffering as well. India Selwyn Jones is a lady doctor in 1900 who defies convention and finds a post in London's East End.

Jennifer Donnelly is the author of thirteen novels - Poisoned, Stepsister, Beauty and the Beast: Lost in a Book, These Shallow Graves, Sea Spell, Dark Tide, Rogue Wave, Deep Blue, Revolution, A Northern Light, The Tea Rose, The Winter Rose and The Wild Rose - and Humble Pie, a picture book for children. And that’s when I learned that the best kind of writing is not the Overwrought Kind, but the one that seems utterly effortless. Mattie’s voice is incredibly poetic and even the simplest descriptions can give goose bumps; however, I think it is also very important to note that her voice is not superfluous or affected. Will she be like her friend and settle to married life or like her other friend and mentor the poet Ms Wilcox.

Jennifer grew up in New York State, in Lewis and Westchester counties, and attended the University of Rochester where she majored in English Literature and European History. Unfortunately, he gives her a cookbook, which, to Mattie, shows he wants her to be just like other girls. I listened and read A Northern Light and give high marks to the narrator Hope Davis for capturing the varied emotions of youth and giving voice to the many characters who comprise this gem. this book, as is, i think would not do so well as an adult-fiction title, but the care that went into writing it, and the multilayeredness of it - it is certainly more ambitious than many of the other titles intended for a teen audience, and i say "three cheers". They tasted like my pa whistling as he came in from the fields at night, or like a new calf getting to its feet for the first time, or like Lawton telling us ghost stories around the fire.
