Face-to-face with the Black Swordsman at last, the Count reveals his true form, and even Guts’ super-sized sword may not be big enough to contend with this demonic monstrosity! I enjoy the experience of reading a manga (which is quite different from reading a novel), I enjoy the art very much, the way the panels are structured and the way the authors plays around with adding or taking away detail depending on the scene. Miura's fame grew after Berserk began "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of this masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary manga artists.

It’s actually really exciting to see the process of Kentaro Miura becoming much more thoughtful about the characters and the themes he’s trying to convey. Puck, Guts’ pint-sized fairy sidekick, is captured when he attempts to stop an old doctor’s execution, and he is given as a gift to the count’s daughter, a sweet girl in a gilded cage, imprisoned by her father in her own room. It tends to just be one long drawn out fight sequence for 20 or 30 pages which you can get desensitized too real quick (even with the ultra violence found within). The evil Count uses his dark powers to transform a defeated guard captain into an inhuman horror to combat Guts, the Black Swordsman.

Even just as a piece of art made largely by one person over 30 years, Berserk really IS beautiful and astounding. While attending college at Nihon University, in 1988, Kentaro Miura debuted a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. At a young age he was sexually assaulted and betrayed by the only person he believed to be his friend. Kentaro Miura's Berserk has cast its enormous shadow for three decades, creating an international legion of acolytes and inspiring a parade of TV series, feature films, and video games. I had to take a break after the eclipse storyline, but by chapter ~130-150 I was just completely enjoying Berserk with no caveats. Towards the end of the volume we also get to see Casca's backstory and how she met Griffith and joined the Band which fits very nicely into the larger story arc.
