This short novella is set in the late 1990s, in Berlin, a city which has been the European magnetic center of the alternative scene since the late 1970s, at least. m., at the Italian Cultural Institute in Berlin, Manuele Fior, one of the most outstanding contemporary comics authors, presents his new graphic novel Hypericon (Coconino 2022), which tells the delicate love story between Teresa and Ruben in 1990s Berlin. La(e) lectrice (eur) plonge avec elle dans le journal de l’archéologue qui a découvert la tombe de Toutankhamon.

I swear to God, Teresea only makes faces that are equivalent to the 0_0 emoji, but the rest of the art makes up for it. I would have liked to know Teresa's age, because going by appearance she could be anywhere between 20 and 45.Jahrhunderts und der Anbruch des neuen Jahrtausends werden in der Graphic Novel «Hypericum» von Manuele Fior in wunderschönen Bildern zusammengebracht. The ending kind of threw me though, I sort of expected something different I guess, or maybe a bit more tension. I think they were meant to show that Teresa's and Reubens's relationship is mostly physical in the beginning, but it felt like it was tossed in just to add drama.

This is a Berlin that doesn't fully exist anymore—where the squatters haven't been evicted, and you can tell the former East and West Berlin by the smell of coal, and war-torn (and Soviet) buildings are still being torn down and rebuilt. And lastly, I'm guessing that the author intended there to be significance in Teressa finally overcoming her chronic insomnia and being able to sleep through the TV coverage of a major world event (no spoilers, but I'm sure that you can guess). In this respect, the data protection declaration of the respective payment service provider applies.

dual story of an archeologist discovering an Egyptian tomb and a grad student with insomnia in Germany who meets a pretentious man child and has a lot of sex. Die zielstrebige Teresa kommt aus Italien in das Berlin der Nachwendezeit, um einen Job im Museum anzutreten. In places, especially in the wider shots of scenes set in Egypt, the art is like fresh watercolors; elsewhere, it tends to be a bit simpler. The muted color palleted and movement lines appropriately engage the written story, and I’d say if this was replaced by a different art style I may not have enjoyed the reading experience as much.

This graphic novel follows Teresa, a scholar who travels to Berlin for an exhibition on Tutankhamen’s tomb. La linea retta, invece, è del tutto assente nella personalissima geometria di Ruben, giovane e velleitario artista italiano. But I don't really understand Teresa and Ruben, both of whom do get something akin to personality grafts near the end of the book, and whose relationship seems largely based on (quite explicit) sex.
